DRP Group – the brand known for years in a new form

Drewnex Company has been operating within the plastics processing industry for over 20 years; this year it will begin its operation under the name of DRP Group. Not only the name will change, but the structure, too, which will allow further development of this flourishing brand.

Interview with Przemysław Miśkiewicz, co-owner of the DRP Group.

The changes at Drewnex have been announced for several months already. Is this finally the time to talk about them in more detail?

Przemysław Miśkiewicz: We have been talking of changes for several months, but in truth we have been preparing for them for a lot longer. Introducing a new name is a symbolic moment, in which we summarise over twenty years of experiences and open a new chapter of the company’s history. We wish to emphasise that our greatest value lies not in the logo itself, but in innovativeness and quality of provided services.

DRP Group, i.e. Drewnex in a new form. What lies behind the company’s acronym?

It is Drewnex Recycling Plastics Group. Our previous name was related to the original activity of the company, i.e. production of wooden pallets. In fact, our domain has for years been recycling, but we do not wish to cut off our roots. To sum up, the DRP Group combines tradition with future.

Not only the name is modified. What else will change at the DRP Group?

There are important changes happening in the structure of the company, which is divided into three departments: recycling, compounding and laboratory. Such division will have influence on the greater specialisation, improved customer service and even more precise adjustment of products and services to individual needs. All this contributes to the improvement of standards and procedures and allows for more effective and efficient company management.

Let’s take a closer look at each of the departments. What is the greatest strength of recycling?

Constant access to high-quality secondary raw materials, careful selection and modern machine park, whose possibilities are fully utilised thanks to appropriately trained employees. At the moment, we process over 5 thousand tons of waste per annum, but our priority is dynamic increase of this amount. What our partners appreciate is a high-quality final product.

The final product is, of course, affected by the quality of polymer base. What sources are used by the DRP Group?

We mainly use high-quality technological waste from reliable suppliers. Firstly, we know their exact composition and properties (specification data are additionally confirmed in our laboratory), secondly – large plants guarantee repeatability and stability of supply. Obviously, we also process and modify the original materials, but in their case one should take into account higher manufacturing costs.

You very often emphasise the meaning of quality in the company.

Quality is not only our family and corporate philosophy, but also a way to succeed in the business. We value it, especially because for many years we independently perfected our standards (over twenty years ago we had no access to the industry press or qualified staff). We are trying to change the image of recycling industry and immodestly I will say that we are succeeding. The best proof of this are the opinions of our partners.

In addition to the opinions, how can one prove that the company’s services really meet the highest standards?

The objective determinants are definitely the industry documentation. We can be proud of, among others, the certificate of the Packaging Research Institute COBRO and implemented as long as 12 years ago norm ISO 9001:2008, which is confirmed by the TÜV Rheinland Inter Cert Kft certificate, as well as regular external audits. DRP Group has been entered on the Reference List of Recycling Plants, and the specialist awards include multiple title of the Fair Play Company, which attests to our ethical responsibility in the business.

The already mentioned specialisation translated into dynamic development of the second department of the DRP Group. What is compounding?

It means giving the plastics created in the course of processing the new, individual properties. It is a new quality in the processing industry – innovative, offering broad possibilities, and what’s more, one that allows limiting operational costs of many companies.

Can you give examples of those properties?

The simplest one is giving the materials an appropriate form or colour; those more advanced are modifications of composites using the fillers (e.g. talc, chalk or glass fibre), application of flame retardants, anti-statics or stabilisers, as well as production of polymer alloys and blends. Moreover, we continue to do research on the development of these possibilities – for example, we currently are working on using the natural fillers (e.g. fibre).

Is compounding an alternative to masterbatches?

It’s an alternative with a much higher potential! Masterbatches are ready concentrates that are added to the materials during production. They impact the characteristics of the final product, but there is no full control over their properties when in use. For comparison: compounding provides significantly broader opportunities for interference and better homogenisation of mass. What’s important, we have a chance to check the quality of material at different stages of manufacturing.

What are the manufacturing possibilities of the DRP Group in this regard?

We can give individual properties to almost 40 types of thermoplastic materials, generating almost infinite number of products. From the logistics side, it is also important that we have at our disposal six production lines adapted to the characteristics of various materials; thanks to that we can independently realise six different products.

Who benefits from the compounding offer?

Our partners are leaders cooperating with the most famous brands in the lighting, automotive, home appliances and electronics industries. They are companies that are constantly working to improve their manufacturing processes and appreciate the opportunities the compounding gives them. Today plastics successfully replace glass or metal alloys, and the scale of their application grows and will be growing in the future.

What are the advantages derived from using modified plastics?

Thanks to them it is possible to lower production costs and improve its quality. In addition to own polymer base, we use waste generated by partners that earlier were often unexploited and constituted the company’s loss. Our task is to modify the materials’ properties in such a way so they are better than the raw materials they are replacing. They must be more durable, more aesthetic and lighter (this feature is particularly desired in automotive industry, because it contributes to lower emissions).

From modification to OMI. What is behind that name?

It is a proprietary trademark, which distinguishes our company’s products. The OMI prefix says that the clients are dealing with the original product line, while the second element informs of the polymer group of the material (e.g. OMILEN, OMIAMID, OMIREN). These are products with new characteristics, of which informs their detailed specification.

Quality means also modern technology. What makes the machinery park of the DRP Group stand out?

Large number and variety of specialist peripheral devices, such as mixers, dispensers, feeders or drying units that allow maintaining the tolerance of processing parameters. The modern machines are also distinguished by mobility and compatibility, thanks to which we can in short time make changes in configuration of individual production lines.

Even the most cutting-edge machines are not enough if the plant has no trained staff and appropriate preparation.

That’s true, hence we put so much emphasis on training, recruitment of competent employees and development of research and laboratory facilities. We already employ more than one hundred people; majority are highly qualified staff. They are people with experience and vision, with whom we successfully implement our assumed goals.

Are scientific facilities the third link in this efficiently functioning machine?

Yes, hence we decided to create a separate division. The laboratory controls the production processes, but also provides external services, cooperates with universities and industry institutes, and continues to conduct scientific research, the results of which are tested and implemented within the company.

What does it mean in practice?

The laboratory works allow, among others, a precise analysis of materials used for processing, constant control during the production, ongoing implementation of corrections in the recipes and ensuring the parameters are compliant with the requirements specified by the client.

Is the laboratory involved in all stages of production? How does this cooperation look like?

Yes, its work starts with the receipt of the waste by the plant. Firstly, we verify the specifications provided by the suppliers, but also make further measurements. We check physical, mechanical and rheological properties of raw materials, and on this basis we make exact evaluation, which allows selecting the waste that is best suited for the characteristics of the final product we wish to obtain. Further inspections take place at various production stages; of course, we test the materials after its completion and on this basis we issue a certificate of quality for the client.

We began with changes, let us finish with them, too. What are the plans for the future of the DRP Group?

Continuous improvement. We will continue to expand and modernise the production part, grow the research & development activity, enhance skills and awareness of the employees. We are facing new goals and tasks. In the nearest future they include the implementation of the investment co-financed by the EU, based on the projects with a high degree of innovativeness. Our partners (and also ourselves) continue to set us new targets, and we promise to try and meet them one hundred per cent.
